Thurrock CC 136-5

played Friday 9th August 2013 – Essex CCC won by 7 Runs

An Essex County Cricket Club eleven which included international stars such as Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait and Netherlands international and Indian Premier League player Ryan ten Doeschate visited Thurrock CC at Blackshots as part of bowler David Masters’ Benefit Year.  Three charities were also beneficiaries, being The David Randall Foundation, Myasthenia Gravis Association and the Professional Cricketers’ Benevolent Fund.  A large crowd of around 350 people were duly entertained by players on all sides.

The day began with free coaching for around fifty young children by David Masters who was assisted by Thurrock coaches Nick Henry, Matthew Hills and Terry Hills.  The 20 over match followed with the Essex XI being captained by David Masters himself. The Essex XI included Ryan ten Doeschate, Shaun Tait, Tymal Mills, Reece Topley, Tim Phillips, Rehan Hassan, Nick Browne and Steve Silver (ex-Leicestershire), plus Jordan Owen and fourteen year old Alfie Feeney from the Thurrock club.

The Essex XI won the toss and decided to bat first with Masters and ten Doeschate opening the innings, both struck some massive blows before ten Doeschate fell to Ryan Madder for 24 off 17 balls, Masters continued the explosive hitting for a well-made 60 off 45 balls before being bowled by Rob Neal. Contributions down the order ensured that the Essex XI posted a competitive 143 for the loss of nine wickets with young Feeney finishing with a creditable 2 not out, while Neal was the pick of the home bowlers with 3-17 from four overs. Umar Ayub and Daniel Laird weighed in with two wickets apiece.

After a quick change around the Thurrock openers Mark O’Neill and Umar Ayub began steadily against the pace of Mills, Masters, Topley and Tait before O’Neill was caught and bowled by leg spinner Hassan for 13. Ayub made a well-compiled 31, while skipper Nick Henry made a quickfire 31.  All-rounder Danny Laird finished on 35 not out as the hosts finished their innings just seven runs adrift.  Spinner Tim Phillips was the pick of the County bowlers with 3-17 from four competitive overs.

Mark O’Neill of Thurrock Cricket Club said: “The day was an amazing day and we as a club are immensely grateful for the support from the club, our members and the community, and all the people who came along to watch. We would also like to thank David Masters and his Benefit Committee for giving us the opportunity to host this event which will live long in the memory of all who were there and took part. The club can be extremely proud of ourselves for all the hard work that went into putting on a show that so many seemed to enjoy.”
