2012 – Stanford le Hope CC Celebrate 125th Anniversary with Spanish Tour

The City and Beaches of BarcelonaAs part of their 125th anniversary celebrations, 33 members of Stanford le Hope cricket club, including players across all its senior teams, plus partners, jetted off for an eight-day tour of Spain, with the party based at Calella, near Barcelona (pictured, right).  The group left Gatwick Airport on Wednesday 4th April 2012 and played matches against Poble Sec and Barcelona International cricket clubs.  It was the first overseas tour undertaken by the club and provided an opportunity for the club to test its new coloured clothing which it planned to use for the 2012 Shepherd Neame T20 competition.

At Poble Sec Cricket Club

This first match took place on a portable plastic “Flicx” pitch which had been laid in a stadium where the playing surface comprised entirely of sand.  Stanford struggled with the unfamiliar conditions, but their hosts, comprising mainly of highly talented expatriate players from various countries, including England, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan, proved to be too strong for the tourists.

At Barcelona International Cricket Club

The second of two fixtures was played on a coconut matting within a grassed ground inside the complex used for the 1992 Olympic Games.  Stanford’s first eleven captain, Lee Knight, hit a magnificent 82 not out but it was not enough to stave off defeat.  The anniversary celebrants may have lost both their tour matches, but at the very least the matches provided some valuable pre-season match practice in a warm Southern European climate, a far cry from the cold and wet conditions experienced in the UK at that time.

Tour Reflections

Mark Nuttall, SLHCC 125 Press Officer, said:  “Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip for the tourists with plenty of time to take in the sights”.   The tour party also visited the Nou Camp, home of Barcelona FC, to watch the La Liga match against Getafe on Tuesday 10th April.  For the record, Barcelona won 4-0; Stanford returned home the next day.
