2011 – Lashings World XI visit Hadleigh and Thundersley CC

Lashings International Day 12th July 2011The second of two visits to the South Essex area by the Lashings World XI in 2011 took place on 12th July when Hadleigh and Thundersley cricket club hosted the international stars of Lashings at their John Burrows ground. Hadleigh, over recent years, had hosted many teams containing international players, but this was the first time that the club had welcomed the Lashings World XI.

The day started with a fine lunch (pictured, above right) and our members and guests being royally entertained by Dave Lee and Scott Charlton doing a very near the knuckle but exceptionally funny comedy routine.Henry Blofeld at Lashings International Day 12th July 2011This was followed by Henry “Blowers” Blofeld (pictured left) regaling the guests with his trip to Hadleigh (Suffolk), apparently the groundsman there reeled off the directions to Hadleigh and Thundersley CC with consumate ease, which left Blowers asking the question:  “How many others have made the same mistake in the past?”

Hadleigh and Thundersley scorer, Mary Tibbenham said: “We were entertained by the best International Cricket Day at Hadleigh for many a year.  I am sure the umpires, Baiju Solanki and Martin Robbins, had an enjoyable a day as I did.  John Lever and Ed Giddins (England) were also on the ground with Ed doing a fair bit of commentating and deciding – with Blowers – that I was the best scorer they had ever worked with.  Well, at least until the next game I suspect…”.

Lashings World XI 286-8
Hadleigh and Thundersley Invitation XI 239-8

Spectators who flocked to the John Burrows Ground at Hadleigh on Tuesday (12th July 2011) saw over 500 runs scored as the visiting Lashings World XI lived up to their reputation as “The Entertainers”.  James Marshall (New Zealand) hit a fine half-century while batting in a resplendent hat for the international eleven while Collis King (West Indies), using a bat weighing an incredible four and a half pounds, and Wasim Jaffer (India), added valuable support with 44 and 43 respectively.  Marshall and Jaffer’s opening partnership, which contributed 82 runs, was finally ended when Wayne Spear (Southend on Sea and EMT) took a fine catch to dismiss Marshall off the bowling of Peter Barnes (Westcliff on Sea).  At which point “Blowers” described Spear as “our hero of the day”.

Inzamam ul Haq (Pakistan) came to the crease.  He ran a few singles, but no two’s or three’s and his innings was then aborted by “hero” Spear who took another catch, this time off the bowling of Jarryd Blake for 21 runs.  For the Hadleigh and Thundersley Invitation eleven, there were two wickets apiece for Hadleigh’s Joe Robbins, Jarryd Blake and Max McNamara of Southend and EMT, but Sean Elliott (Leigh on Sea) was the most economical bowler for the hosts as he conceded just 37 runs from his seven overs – a fine effort against such talented stars.

If anyone was thinking at the interval that the result of the match was a foregone conclusion, their thoughts would have changed quickly as Robbins got into top gear with the bat.  He struck a magnificent 82 before he was caught on the boundary by King off the bowling of Inzamam.  “Our hero” Spear was less heroic with the willow when he was bowled by Mark Ealham (England) without score, but apart from that mishap, everyone else contributed some runs, especially Blake who pitched in with 44 runs, the home side were able to get within 39 runs of the target set by their illustrious guests.
