2011 – Lashings World XI at Belhus Cricket Club

Saqlain Mushtaq lunches with corporate guests at the Belhus v Lashings World XI fixtureThe first of two visits to South Essex in 2011 by the Lashings World XI took place on 10th June when Belhus cricket club hosted the international stars of Lashings at the North Stifford Village Green, which is the club’s main ground.  Lunch was held for approximately 150 members and corporate guests (pictured right with Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan) in a marquee on the ground, while Henry Blofeld OBE hosted a “silent auction” which raised a four figure sum for St. Luke’s Hospice (Basildon & Thurrock).  Lashings World XI twelfth man Henry Olonga (ex Zimbabwe) showed his fine singing talents with the aria Nessun Dorma, then both captains, Ed Giddins (England and Lashings), together with Wayne Read of Belhus, introduced their respective players.

Despite bad weather in the morning and during the lunch period, the main playing area had been heavily protected.  As a result, the match started with just a thirty minute delay, but no shortening of the game was required and the match was played out to the full scheduled 35-overs per innings.  In a surprise move, esteemed BBC Test Match Special radio commentator Henry Blofeld set up his microphone to provide commentary on the game in his usual inimitable style.  It was estimated that 600 spectators had turned up and the scene was now set for the action to begin.Lashings World XI Logo
