2010 – Belhus Cricket Club’s 50th Anniversary

Belhus Cricket Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2010. The club produced a commemorative brochure following extensive research of its history; there was a celebratory cricket week with some notable fixtures, and the season was rounded off by the successful hosting of a Essex Over 60s fixture who in turn were entertaining a Victoria Over 60s touring team.

Cricket Week

It had been some considerable time since Belhus CC last staged a cricket week, however, it seemed fitting that this should change for the 50th Anniversary celebrations. On Sunday 29th August, a Belhus team entertained its own first eleven from 1988, the result being that the team from 22 years ago, re-assembled by Mark Winter, had a very comfortable victory – by 125 runs.

The following day, a Bank holiday, saw the club host Old Dartfordians, while on Tuesday 31st August, Essex Over 60s visited, with Belhus emerging with a six-wicket win. On Wednesday 1st September, Hornchurch Athletic came away from North Stifford with a win by two wickets. The next day was the long-awaited return of Prague CC. The tourists from the Czech Republic scored 192 for 9 with Brian Edwards claiming four wickets for 48 runs, while Belhus reached their target with 3.5 overs to spare, thanks to half centuries from Luke Clements and Billy Winter. The celebratory week concluded with the visit of Ardleigh Green, who romped to a nine-wicket victory in dismissing Belhus for 148.

Display at Thurrock Museum

The extensive research for the commemorative brochure led the club’s President, Denis Reed, to have several meetings with local historian Jonathan Catton, who is also curator of the Thurrock Museum. This in turn led the club to having a large display in the museum which is based in the Thameside Theatre and library building in Orsett Road, Grays.

There are two large display cases at the Thurrock Museum which capture memorabilia from the 50 years of Belhus Cricket Club – with some articles pre-dating the formation of the club. The display opened on 1st August 2010 and is expected to remain open until December 2010 – admission to the Thurrock Museum is free.

Essex Over 60s v. Victoria State Over 60s (Australia)

At the very end of the season, on Thursday 30th September, the club successfully hosted the Essex Over 60s in their fixture with their counterparts from Cricket Victoria (pictured below). Essex batted first and scored 159-6, in reply the tourists were restricted to 98 for 5. The Victorians had met several County teams, having played the Wales Over 60 team before their visit to Belhus CC. It was then on to the warmer climes of the La Manga resort in Spain for a cricket festival, in which Victoria succeeded in reaching the final.
