1998 – Horndon on the Hill CC Triumph in U16 Essex Matchplay Competition

Horndon on the Hill 155-7;
Wanstead 146 all out

Horndon on the Hill cricket club became the first in the South Essex District Cricket Board area to lift the coveted U16 Essex Matchplay trophy at the Essex County Ground, Chelmsford, on Sunday 13th September, 1998.

The match suffered a short delay at the start due to indifferent weather, but the game was soon underway in a slightly reduced format, 38 overs per side instead of the normal 40.  Horndon reached 155 for the loss of seven wickets from their allotted overs.  Andrew Hilditch top scored with 38, Phil Keeping hit 26 and Russell Hamilton also kept the scoreboard ticking with 24.   For opponents Wanstead, Murad Umerji claimed three wickets and a cost of just 29 runs.

In reply, Wanstead appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory at 91 for 3, with Adnam Akram contributing 28 and his captain Milan Patel looking both stylish and comfortable.  However, some excellent Horndon fielding produced no fewer than four run-outs and  suddenly Wanstead were 127 for 7.  The pressure was really on the batting side and, with just nine balls remaining, Hilditch (2-31) bowled the last player to leave skipper Patel high and dry with 50 not out in an all out total of 146.

Andrew Hilditch was justifiably nominated as player of the match by adjudicator Alan Lilley.  The umpires were Tim McCoy (South Ockendon) and Les Cooper (Brentwood).  Horndon had been managed throughout their campaign by Peter Gregory and Jim Medlycott.

A match programme was produced by the Essex County Cricket Club.  For all the excellent arrangements made, disappointingly, this publication did not meet those standards.  There is also one major correction needed; U16 Matchplay began in 1988.  To view the programme, please click here.  (Opens in a new window in adobe pdf format.)

From member clubs of the South Essex District Cricket Board, Horndon on the Hill CC remained the only winners of Essex Matchplay until ten years later, when Hadleigh and Thundersley defeated Woodford Wells in the 2008 final.
