1998 – 50th Anniversary Celebrations of Benfleet Cricket Club

Benfleet 50th Anniversary MascotThe fiftieth celebrations of Benfleet Cricket Club culminated in two matches being played on a sunny President’s day in August.  Jon Hunter was in his first year as Club President, a post he held until 2003. Two Benfleet elevens played teams made up from 22 former members.  A superb celebration lunch in a marquee was attended by the players and some guests to reflect a true spirit and camaraderie.

The Woodside Park ground looked a picture with the marquee, bunting and floral arrangements in front of the clubhouse patio area and prestine looking squares. Even the bar areas did not escape decoration. There was even a 50th Anniversary Club Mascot knitted by Helen Steed (pictured, right), but what was the mascot’s name?

Benfleet 50th Anniversary Cheque PresentationThe 50th Anniversary Celebration matches also provided an occasion for the club’s loan from a local brewery to be cleared.   Pictured with the representative from Greene King (second left) are Peter Kaufman (left), Jon Wright (second right) and club chairman John Tremain (right).

The rosettes being worn were handmade for the fiftieth celebrations by Marion Hitchcock. “Benfleet CC – 50 Years” was shown in the centre of each rosette.
