Horndon on the Hill achieved a remarkable double in the U16 Indivijewels League. By beating Orsett by two wickets they made it ten wins out of ten for a second year running to clinch the championship at Grays School. Horndon, though, were in a bit of trouble early on in the final game and it was Barry Ponsonby, who dug them out of trouble with an unbeaten 30 after Vale (3-13) had ripped out the top order. Orsett had totalled 56-5, with Mark Richardson’s 17 the top score.
Belhus clinched the runners-up position – their best ever placing – though it was close against Pegasus, who came within seven runs of matching their opponents’ century total. Reshad Mulboccus had set Belhus on the way with an unbeaten 29, while Matthew Vallis played a valuable supporting role on 22. Ian Turnbull of Pegasus kept the reply above the asking-rate by striking 40, with help from Grant Nicholls (18). Mullboccus and Tom Thompson took two wickets apiece.
In the remaining fixture of the final week of competition, Pegasus [A] avoided the wooden spoon with a comfortable five-wicket victory over Stanford to send them to the bottom. The awards were presented on behalf of sponsor Indivijewels of Hatton Garden by Graham Jelley of the Essex County Cricket Board.
