Central u13 vs. South u13 @ Hutton CC

Team:   F Barton, T Casson*†, S Ejaz, C Harris, R Martin, D Mitchell, T Pinkerton, T Redman, H Seaden, N Van Lint, W Wheeler, Z Wilson

The final 40 over game of the season for South. If we win we have a ‘winning season’, if we lose we don’t. Which will it be?

Before the match the Central u13 coach mentioned that over 600 runs had been scored on the wicket at the weekend and he expected the game to be a high scoring one.

We lost the toss and Central decided to bat first. As usual Freddie opened, this time with Dylan as his strike partner. Success arrived early with Dylan getting a wicket in the 2nd over (2-1), Freddie getting one in the 3rd (4-2) and5th (14-3) and Dylan picking up another 2 in the 8th (28-4). Really good bowling from Freddie and Dylan yet Central were still scoring at nearly 4 an over.

Once Freddie and Dylan stood down there was a mini stand until Will picked up a wicket in the 14th over (67-6) and we were working through the team. 91-7 in the 17th over, 127-8 in the 22nd. Although the run rate was nearing 6 an over it looked like we would get Central out for a moderate total.

T Mortlock came out at 9 with CricHQ showing him as averaging 15 with a high score of 8. His coach said he was definitely playing as a bowler not a bat. 88 runs later, from 55 balls, Ted was not out. He had put on 123 runs with J Smith and moved the game to a different level. When we picked up the final couple of wickets Central had accrued 272, mainly from some lusty hitting.

Our normally very frugal Freddie had gone for over 6 runs an over with Dylan being by far the most economical bowler with figures of 8-2-27-4. Clearly a challenging total for us to get but anything they could do we could.

At the break we talked about getting a target requiring 7.32 runs per over and that Central had started at about 4 and accelerated, we could do the same.

Nick and Harry opened and looked pretty comfortable from the off. After 12 overs we were 48 runs for no loss and we were hopeful that they could start to up the run rate. Unfortunately due to a combination of good bowling and sensible field placing it was not to be. We continued scoring at 4 an over pretty much through to the 30th over. Nick and Harry were each out just short of their fifties trying to push on; Taylor and Tommy tried to hit and run everything but it was too little too late.

At the end we scored 191-4 with three players reaching 45 but not making 50 (Harry, Nick and Taylor). Taylor gets a mention for his 155% strike rate; Tommy gets another honourable mention as he was run out pushing for a single whilst his batting partner watched the mis-hit ball go in the air back to the bowler. Who dropped it.

Although the difference in scores shows we were soundly beaten it was really down to Ted hitting consistently and cleanly and our players not really being able to figure out how to bowl and field to him. This is an u13 team after all and at worst this was a learning experience.

Central u13        272 all out
South u13         191-4

Central win by 81 runs.

So the 40 over season ends for us with played 5, won 2 lost 3.

On to the T20s.
