Benfleet Ladies taste success at Rayleigh Cricket Festival

On Sunday (29th July 2012), Rayleigh Cricket Club hosted a womens’ and girls’ eight a side festival which attracted teams from South Board member clubs Belhus, Benfleet and Rayleigh, as well as those from outside our district board area, being Bentley, Great Waltham and Old Chelmsfordians.   Each side played two games in a three-team league format and then a further game against a team from the other league.  The final saw Benfleet edge out last year’s winners, Old Chelmsfordians, by just two runs in a thrilling finale.  Brian Dawbarn, Chairman of Rayleigh Cricket Club said: “Despite two heavy downpours all the games were completed and the players seemed to enjoy the day”.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Casey Stoney, who was captain of the Great Britain Olympic Football team that reached the quarter-final stages of London 2012, was the first female cricketer to play for Rayleigh, back in the Summer of 1994.
