Exciting finishes in Youth Finals

The 2012 youth finals produced a couple of exciting finishes as the sun finally shone for our young cricketers. At Benfleet, the Under 11 final was decided off the last ball when Albon (19 not out) struck a boundary for Rankins to see then overtake Leigh’s 269 for 2 (net 259) in which van Lint scored a fine 21 not out. On the adjoining pitch, Westcliff scored 120 for 5 and managed to cap a fine season with a nail-biting 6-run win over Rayleigh who ended just short with 114 for 7. A number of batsmen shone with Westcliffs Lockhart, Pinkerton and McKay all scoring 25 as did Jones and Dobson for Rayleigh.

In the Under 15 final at Wickford, Leigh had a comfortable 8-wicket win over Westcliff, chasing down the latter’s 107 for 7 in just over 15 overs, mainly thanks to Barton, 38 not out and Metcalf 33 not out.

The Board wishes to place on record its thanks to both Benfleet and Wickford clubs for hosting these finals and providing excellent hospitality to the many supporters who came along to watch.

Excitement on Youth Finals Day

The first Sunday in September is traditionally our Youth Finals day and our three finals produced a thrilling climax to the season with two finals decided by just one run and the other by two wickets in the last over.  As usual, the U15 and U13 finals were held at Benfleet CC, while the U11 final was held at Wickford CC.  The South Essex District Cricket Board would like to thank the hard-working volunteers at our host clubs, including umpires, scorers, caterers and groundstaff along with the management, players and supporters of all the finalists for making the finals special occasions for all our young players.

Rayleigh CC - Under 15 SEDCB Champions 2011

In the Under 15 final, an exciting match that swung to and fro throughout was finally decided with Rayleigh (pictured right) coming out on top by just two wickets.  Wickford batted first and were restricted to a total of 78 by good tight bowling and three direct hit run outs.  This target looked well within reach with George Barker and Christian Humphries looking comfortable against the Wickford attack but when both were run out in the same over and wickets falling steadily thereafter, Wickford appeared to be in command of the game.  But several lusty blows by Nick Buckley and Gideon Humphries together with good running by Tom Peppiatt and Matt Jahanfar kept Rayleigh in the game.  With eight wickets down and three overs to go it was left to Luke Keeley and Jahanfar to get twelve runs and then five from the final over.  A neat late cut from Jahanfar for four and then a single saw Rayleigh home with three balls to spare in a nail biting finish.

Orsett CC - Under 13 SEDCB Champions 2011

In the Under 13 final, Orsett (pictured left) won by just one run against Basildon and Pitsea after the latter’s last wicket pair just failed in their attempt to score ten runs off the last over.  Earlier, Thomas Haden scored 25 not out as Orsett reached 88 for the loss of nine wickets.  In the Basildon & Pitsea reply, Orsett’s Joseph Mitchell took 3-19. Jack Plom bowled very tightly, conceding just seven runs from his alloted four overs (one wicket).  Harry Lockyer kept up the pressure by claiming two wickets for just eight runs.  But Basildon & Pitsea fought back well as the second ball of the final over was hit for six, but tighter bowling then ensued which left three runs required from the last ball.  A drive was hit to the cover fielder and only one run was mustered.

Wickford CC - Under 11 SEDCB Champions 2011

Wickford (pictured right) played out a tense maiden last over to defeat Westcliff by the same margin in the Under 11 pairs format final.  Westcliff batted first and scored 295 for the loss of nine wickets, which yielded a net score of 250.  Wickford’s Lee Grimes took three wickets for fifteen runs in three overs and colleague Josh Spooner served up 2-7 from two overs.  Wickford, with home advantage, scored 36 runs off the first eight overs requiring just fifteen runs from the remaining dozen overs.   At this point the visitors introduced their key bowlers and this paid dividends as five Wickford wickets fell leaving the last pair one run ahead with four overs to survive.  Five runs were added before Essex bowler Lockhart struck with the last ball of the penultimate over.   This left the hosts just one run ahead but young David Vose defended heroically against district captain Tom Baker to win the match as Wickford finished on 276-5, yielding a net score of 251.  For Westcliff, Lockhart picked up 2-5 from three overs and Pinkerton returned figures of 2-6, also from three overs.

District sides fail to shine in T20 matches

The South Board sides failed to achieve any success in this years inter-district T20 competitions.  Some poor batting saw the under elevens lose their play-off match against the North Board by five wickets with just one over to spare and the under thirteens disappointingly lost in their semi-final to the Metropolitan Board by a similar margin after only scoring 98-9 in their 20 overs. Their third/fourth place play-off with the Central Board was rained-off after just 15 overs with our opponents on 77 for 3.  The under fifteens  scored over 140 in both their matches, but lack-lustre fielding and bowling saw them lose to the West by six wickets in their semi-final and to the North by 11 runs in the third/fourth place play-off.

Individual Junior Coaching – Autumn 2011 – reserve list started

As part of our ongoing efforts to develop cricket talent within our District, some of the coaches involved in our performance programme have decided to offer 30-minute, one-to-one coaching sessions at FitzWimarc School on Thursday evenings between Oct 6 and Dec 16.  The coaches, John Wade, Simon Humby, Scott Simmons, David Wright and Mike Sullivan are all fully qualified ECB coaches and will provide a written report to each attendee upon completion of the 12-week period, which will highlight both strengths and areas for future development. The sessions are aimed at children who are Under 15 as at September 1, 2011, will start at 8.00pm, 8.30pm or 9.00pm and will cost £175 for the full 12-week programme.

Having initially given our current district squad members first option, the last of the remaining 30-minute sessions have also now been booked. A reserve list has now been started for those who wish to be contacted on an ad-hoc basis should any of the sessions become free at any time. If you wish to be added to this reserve list, please send an email to John Wade (jwwade@btinternet.com) stating your preferred time and contact details. Once all replies have been received, timings will be confirmed to all participants and registration forms distributed.

In order to be fair to everyone, it is important to understand that this coaching will not influence future selection for district representative squads which will continue to be based on the trials which will be held after Christmas.

Inter-District Cricket – week commencing 1st August 2011

The final round of matches were played this week against the Metropolitan Board – or at least, most were. The Under 15 match was postponed at the last minute by our opponents who were incredibly unable to raise a side. The Under 11’s put up a brave performance against a strong side,  going down by 5 wkts after scoring 148  for 5 in their 40 overs. Skipper Tom Baker (Westcliff) led the way with 41 runs and 3 for 16 and was well supported by Oliver Kersley (Benfleet) who scored 26. The Under 13’s however had a very successful week and showed just how much they have improved by initially overcoming their Met counterparts by 71 runs. Our score of 192 for 5 was built around a positive opening 37 by skipper, Austin Holmes (Hadleigh), was sustained by Harry Lockyer (Orsett) who scored 44 and finished off by an excellent unbeaten partnership of 69 between the Rayleigh pair of Max Jones (45 not out) and Matt Dobson (35 not out). In reply, Mohammed Khokar (Leigh) bowled admirably straight to finish with 4 for 30 and all the other bowlers showed consistent discipline in support.

The week ended with a highly enjoyable match against the Dutch National U13 side at Garon Park. We were put into bat and it was Harry Slack (Leigh) and Praneet Patel (Rankins) who set up the platform for a good score with 42 and 32 respectively. However, some tight bowling eventually restricted us to 143 for 6 in our 40 overs with Matt Dobson this time scoring a vital 18 runs at the end.The Dutch batted very positively and at 114 for 3 looked to be winning, but inspired spells by Joe Mitchell (Orsett) and Harry Slack  who took 4/19 and 3/16 respectively turned the tables and we ended victorious by just 1 run with 3 balls to spare. In a great team performance led by the thoughtful captaincy of Austin Holmes, the fielding and catching were of a very high standard throughout.

We next look forward to the district T20 festivals with the U11’s first to play this week in the preliminary play-off on Wednesday Aug 10th at Billericay CC, 11.00 start. As usual, all support will be very welcome.
